Word Wonder -- companion

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

companion
1. one who accompanies another or others; a comrade; associate. [from the Middle English compainoun, which comes from the Old French compagnon, which comes from the Latin companio. The Latin word is thought to come from a Germanic word akin to the Goth (a German warring tribe) gahlaiba, companion or fellow soldier, which, in turn, comes from the Old High German galeipo, companion. Made from com, meaning "together" and panis, meaning "bread"] -- Funk & Wagnall's Canadian College Dictionary and Webster's Dictionary of Word Origins

Picture a group of people standing and seated in a circle. Vessels of wine and water, flour and cheese are in evidence. Laughter enlivens the scene with friendly conversation and teasing.

These companions could be sitting around a fire, their weapons at the ready and helmets scattered on the ground. Or they could be standing around a modern table, as ready with cutting board and knives as their predecessors were with sticks upon which to roast their meat and bread.

Mark, Lucas, Ashlee, Annie, Anthony

My companions this past weekend  welcomed me into their circle to enjoy gnocchi and chicken cutlets prepared by Anthony and Annie. My son and I, along with hosts Ashlee and Mark, learned how to knead the dough and then shape it by rolling it off a fork. We laughed a lot at each other's lumpy results (though Ashlee takes the prize for the best-ridged ones).

What prompted me to write this post was the companionable, relaxed feeling throughout all of Friday evening. Annie and Anthony took their time kneading and rolling the dough, trimming and coating the cutlets. No one was in a hurry, no one had to be somewhere else. Everyone's serene pace seeped into my weary bones and reached the core of me with nearly-forgotten softness and peace.

This group of friends demonstrated the exact meaning of the word "companion" -- that of breaking bread together. Though they haven't known each other for long, it looks like they're discovering fine friends in one another. They laugh and work and play together, in various combinations. On Friday, their mutual respect was evident in the kindness and appreciation shown in all sorts of ways.

Some of my warm appreciation probably comes from the stressed condition in which I arrived. But most of it comes from seeing and experiencing companionship in action Friday night and all weekend. It was wonderful to recharge my batteries in such good company, and I'm grateful.

To fully appreciate the depth of meaning in the word "companion," look at the list of modern words that are related through their ancient root, - (which means " to protect, feed"):
fodder, forage, fur, pabulum, food, feed, foster, pasture, antipasto, repast, pastor, pantry, companion, and company.
If you're reading this in a state of overload or even desperation, I encourage you to make time to recharge. Whether in solitude or with caring companions, whether breaking bread or not, please allow yourself the balm of deep relaxation. Be a companion to yourself and others.

Flowers & Passing it On

Sunday, March 14, 2010

It's been a few days since I made it on here due to Internet glitches that kept me offline. It feels good to be back, though I have to keep this post short. I'm heading off to have lunch with some good friends, one of whom is a beautiful 2-year old whose smile pretty much melts me into total, happy submission when she asks to climb onto my lap and read another story.

The other night a friend came over for our pre-arranged supper. She carried with her a beautiful bouquet of fresh-cut flowers. What a treat! I told her about my blog post earlier in the week in which I'd talked about the healing, refreshing, energizing power of flowers...and here she was, proving what I'd read and written.

The next morning when I got up, the first thing I consciously noticed was those flowers on the kitchen table, and they did perk me up and give me a good feeling. Both her kind thought and the flowers' beauty worked their magic, and I decided I'd buy flowers for a friend soon, too. I actually tried to yesterday, but our grocery store didn't have any left, and there's nowhere else to buy flowers at this time of year.

But the seed has been planted -- pun intended -- and I will soon pass on the small delight of fresh cut flowers to someone. And I'll probably buy some for our home, too. What a simple pleasure.

International Friendship Week

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

I took a look at my long list of holidays and observances (see my February 1 post for a short list) and discovered that we're in the middle or so of International Friendship Week. I think that's a neat idea, though I view its origins with some skepticism -- what if it was started by a greeting card company? In a brief search, I couldn't find out where it started, but I'm drawing attention to it because, like the other holidays and observances I write about, it doesn't hurt to be reminded of something worth thinking about.

What if each of us wrote down the names of three, five or ten friends and then did any or all of the following for them:
  1. Call and ask how her day is going. Have a chat.
  2. Say a prayer/Send him love for five minutes.
  3. Bake her favourite goodie and take it over while it's fresh.
  4. Make a card and mail it. (Okay, you can buy one if you must.)
  5. Offer to take care of one tedious task for him.
  6. Take her out for tea, coffee, or a meal.
  7. Invite her for a night or afternoon out to some fun event.
  8. Take care of another tedious task for him.
  9. Text or email him a short list of what you like about him.
  10. Thank her for being your friend.
I think that I can pretty much guarantee that both you and your friend(s) will feel better afterwards, no matter what's going on in your lives.

Is Love in the Air?

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Today is Valentine's Day Eve, if you will, and I'm offering a thought or two before the day itself. Give you time to think about it and rush off to the store.

However Valentine's Day came to be observed to the extent it is in North America today, I am skeptical about much of it. I'm not fully jaded, chalking it up to greeting card companies alone, but I do lean toward the "much ado about nothing" camp.

All the same, one aspect of V's Day with which I cannot argue is its devotion to devotion...to numerous expressions of love and friendship: flowers, candy, poetry, dinners out, heart-shaped cookies, pretty cards, extra kisses and hugs.

So if you have a friend, lover, or stranger to whom you wish to offer an extra splash of love tomorrow, do it with gusto! I believe that any act of love, friendship, or fellow feeling is a good thing. Here are some quotes from a few people who seem to agree:

Tell the lonely people there's love in the world.
     -- Al Green

It's love, it's love that makes the world go 'round.
-- Anonymous. Used by W. S. Gilbert in Iolanthe.

Oh, Happy race of men, if love, which rules Heaven, rule your minds.
     -- Boethius, Consolations of Philosophy

Flower o' the broom,
Take away love, and our earth is a tomb.
-- Robert Browning, Fra Lippo Lippi

Across the gateway of my heart
I wrote, "No Thoroughfare,"
But love came laughing by, and cried:
"I enter everywhere."
     -- Herbert Shipman, No Thoroughfare
